Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is your therapy approach?
My approach is problem-focused, aimed at helping to resolve specific issues and problems that have been troubling you. To achieve this goal, I use a variety of therapeutic methods in which I have been trained.

2. What should I expect from the first session?
The first session is like a visit to your family doctor. I will ask you many questions about the reason for your visit, the particular issues and concerns you wish to address, and your goals for therapy. I will also speak with you about my approach to therapy and give you an opportunity to ask questions. By the end of the first session, I will offer you some first impressions of what our work might include.

3. How do I pick a therapist who is right for me?
Choosing a therapist is a very personal matter. It is most important that you select someone with whom you feel comfortable. If you have the time, schedule an initial consultation with a few therapists. This will help you to see how each therapist works and to determine your level of ease with each.

4. How often will I need to come and how long will I be in therapy?
That depends. Although I believe that therapy should be efficient and cost-effective, the amount of time you spend in therapy will depend upon your particular needs and goals. We will discuss both the frequency of sessions and the expected length of therapy during your first visit.

5. What is your fee?
The standard fee for sessions is $150. Fees may be adjusted depending upon (1) your ability to pay and (2) the type of insurance coverage you have. The fee will be determined during your initial session.

6. Do you handle insurance?
Yes. I am a participating provider in many insurance networks. Also, I will be glad to help you obtain accurate information about your specific benefits, clarify this information, and file any necessary claims. Although most insurance policies provide some coverage for mental health services, the coverage varies greatly from one policy to the next.
Therefore it is very important to obtain the following information from your insurance company:
(1) How many therapy sessions are covered per calendar year?
(2) Is there a pre-existing condition clause?
(3) Do I have to meet a deductible?
(4) Is pre-certification required?
(5) Is there a co-payment per visit?
(6) How do I submit claims?

7. What are your office hours?
Office hours in Chicago are as follows:
Monday 12:45 p.m. - 8:15 p.m
Wednesday 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Thursday 10:00 a.m. - 8:15 p.m.
Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Additional weekday hours available periodically. Phone sessions may be scheduled if necessary.

8. What if I travel frequently and can't set up regular appointments?
That is okay with me. I understand that people today lead busy and hectic lives. Whether you prefer to schedule a regular or variable appointment time, I will try to accommodate your needs. Also, phone sessions are available if you are out of town or ill.

9. Do you prescribe medication?
No, only a physician can do that. However, I do work closely with psychiatrists and other medical doctors and can help you to schedule an appointment for a medication evaluation.

10. Our relationship is in trouble but my partner refuses to come to therapy.
Can you help?

This is a common situation. Ideally, when the problem is a relational one, both parties will attend at least some sessions together. If this is not possible, I will meet with one partner and explore ways to address the problems and to encourage the other partner's participation in therapy. Know that it is still possible to make relationship changes even if only one partner is able to attend the sessions.
